1954 Dress (aka Betty Draper Cupcake Dress) Update

I did some power sewing (don't ask me what that entails) yesterday, one hour before I was supposed to be heading to work and I got a lot done on the '54 Dress. Thanks to my Bernina, making buttoholes is no longer scary because once I program it, it does all the work for me. And they come out precise and well made. Who knew?!

So, this dress now has a bodice that is attached to the skirt, buttonholes, buttons (of which I'm not really digging right now...I'm thinking antique glass buttons or self covered would give the effect I want). Although, the bright red plastic ones give it an essence of kitsch that I'm seemingly okay with. I also still have some hand sewing to do in the shoulders, make a few tacks in the hem, and rework the fitting in the back. Somehow the back keeps buckling, resulting in the shoulders to fall down my arms. It's really just a matter of fit. But otherwise, it's shaping up quite beautifully. The bodice fits me so well (aside from the back issue) that I'm in awe. I love the way the "sleeve" grazes down over the shoulder and ends in a nice polite neckline.

Also, I figured out the crinoline situation. Thank goodness!

I'm hoping to get this all done today because I'm going to a Burlesque show on Saturday and I want to be all decked out in 50's garb.

Progress:

happy sewing!
