apron wear

So, I've been meaning to make a post about how much I love wearing aprons. I found a wonderful 1970s apron smock at the local thrift store for $1 and have been wearing it as a shirt. I'll make another post later with my other apron adventures.

Vintage 1970s Wrap Skirt: Thrifted from Sazz Vintage Warehouse

If you live in the Philadelphia area, you should definitely check out Sazz Vintage in Kensington. It's a  small warehouse and it pretty much is a "spend hours picking through boxes" kind of place. Everything is separated by decade/style and type of clothing so it's easy to find things. You just have to spend some time. Also, I don't suggest going there on a hot day because it's probably like 15 degrees hotter in there than outside. You get really really sweaty. Stuff is priced fairly decent although vintage dresses prior to the 1970s are kind of pricey. A good place to find skirts, secretary dresses and blouses!

Check them out!

How do you wear aprons?

tropical sunday

We're finally having a semi-summer day! I'm celebrating with 1960s tropical nonsense. I bought this dress last year on a thrifting adventure in New Jersey. It was only $3! I have a bunch of other super awesome dresses from that same thrift store in my closet that I will eventually post about. I really should make an effort to go up there again. The selection was insane. However, it's location (unlike most places I go) will remain my little secret. ;)

trash sewing score: $1.50 summer dress

I'm in the mood for summer. Which also means I'm in the mood to wear summer dresses. Which also means I'm ready to start sewing summer dresses like a crazy person. This is my first summer dress project for the year. I made it from $1 thrift store curtains, a 25 cent zipper and a package of 25 cent piping. Thank you local thrift store! I whipped up a basic bodice pattern and then piped the seams...and then added one of the curtain panels as the skirt. EASY! Took me an hour, tops.

I take really awkward pictures...
Dress: Handmade by me! $1.50
Belt: Thrifted $0.50
Necklace: Thrifted $0.50
Boots: Buffalo Exchange $7.00

Outfit Total: $9.50! Score!

Cute puppy!

More summer dresses on the way.

Summer Sewing Flashback: 2010

Man, I think that 2010 was my best sewing year. I got so much stuff accomplished that summer it was RIDICULOUS. I think I spent every night staying up until 4am, chugging coffee and having Doctor Who marathons while trying to finish my next project. I'm hoping that this summer I will make 10 times more than I did two years ago. Here's a little recap of all the cute things I made in the summer of 2010...and my red hair! Remember that?!

I had such cool backgrounds to pose with back then! I'm hoping to take loads of photos this week! In other news, I've finally moved my sewing room into my actual room. Talk about cramped!

Trash Tutorial: DIY Sewing Box!

Okay, here's a little DIY project for the coming weekend: Making a cute vintage inspired sewing box out of an old lunchbox!

When I was a little kid, I had a lot of plastic lunchboxes through the school years...Cabbage Patch Kids, The Lion King, Dinosaurs...you name it. So, I always had extra ones laying around which I would use for purposes other than holding sandwiches and Lunchables. Sometimes I would keep my Crayons and markers in them, Barbie Clothes, snail mail letters, cassette tapes...

These days I have a lot of sewing junk and craft supplies laying around and never enough places to put them or carry them in. *Ping!* Idea!

I saw a little red Thermos lunchbox at my local charity shop for 50 cents the other day and knew it could be turned into something awesome. I also grabbed some scraps of fabric for 75 cents and got to work.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Old lunchbox. Plastic or metal. Your choice.
  • Modge Podge
  • Fabric Glue
  • Large Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Fabric Scraps and some kind of trim. (Pom pom trim is the best choice!)

Step One: Measure the face of the lunchbox. Mine came around to 7" X 5" give or take. Using a large scrap of fabric, cut a background using these given measurements. Make sure it fits but don't worry about matching up the edges as you cover them later.

Step 2: Paint on a thick layer of Modge Podge over the face of the lunchbox. Lay down the background fabric, pressing firmly. Let it dry for a few minutes.

Step 3: Cut out a cute design for your box using fabric scraps. I chose mushrooms for a 1970s vibe. Once you situate your design, apply it to the background using fabric glue.

Step 4: The edges around the box are going to look pretty yucky. Cover them in a pretty trim all the way around using fabric glue. Make sure to press down firmly for a bit as sometimes it doesn't always want to stick. Viola! Pretty new sewing box!

I'm currently using mine to hold all my bias tape.

Go create things out of junk!

generation X

I got my second tattoo yesterday! (The Daniel Johnston “Hi How Are You” froggie) One of the guys in the tattoo shop I walked into was like…“Whoa! You look like Exene Cervenka! I wanna tattoo this girl!”

It was funny because I’ve been listening to a lot of X lately and drowning myself in 80s band tshirts and oversized blazers. This is pretty much my uniform. :)

Overall (using items I already had) threw together this outfit for $10! Talk about trash score!

The blazer I found at a local charity shop for $3, the tshirt is my beloved vintageTrafford Tanzi tee that I scored at another local charity shop for only $1!!! I found the little vintage yellow vinyl purse at Philly AIDS Thrift for $6. I swear if you haven’t been to AIDS and are in the Philly area you have to check them out…they are rad!

The Docs were my birthday present to myself last week. :D I pretty much wear them with everything now. Really looking forward to going back and getting a pair of the shiny hot pink ones.

Here he is! I didn't think it was going to HURT as much as it did and continues to hurt. But that's what I get for getting it on my inner arm, I suppose. Next up? Enid Coleslaw tattoo. Can't wait.

PS...I bought my Daniel Johnston tickets to see him next month at Union Transfer with my dearest friend Erik. I'm seriously squirming in my chair with anticipation!!!!!!!!!!!!
